Art New Zealand Cover Feature: But How Does It Mean?

I feel extremely privileged to be in the summer issue of Art New Zealand, along with the talented Yolunda Hickman and Dorota Broda.  The beautifully written article, about the potentials of aesthetic experience in conceptual art, is by Ed Hanfling.  The cover was by Russ Flatt, an amazing photographer and lovely chap.

Here's a little titbit:

"I am drawn to the work of these three artists because it is, in the same way as certain abstract paintings, reserved, quiet, rigorous and open.  Other artists have taken conceptual art in a different direction, towards complexity rather than succinctness; they make bloated installations that seem to be trying to convince the viewer that they are full of ideas, but instead degenerate into overwhelming, over-stimulating visual spectacle.  The lean, tough materiality of the works under discussion here, is more resistant, withheld, conceptually complex by dint of its aesthetic simplicity."

Shucks, thanks Ed!

EyeContact Review: Embracing Process, Discarding Nothing

Well, gracious me!  Thank you, Peter Dornauf, for your review of If you do start making cheese, I recommend a Farmhouse Cheddar - or - At least striving for positivity in the knowledge of a limited time in which one can be productive.

Here's a cheeky snippet: "This show, in an almost literal sense, is about art as process [...] And it is not, I hasten to add - for those already drooling at the thought of “process” - what might be traditionally expected in a show of such focus."

I'm truly delighted to be part of this group show (running until August 30th) with the talented Daphne Simons, Ena Kosovac and Michelle Beattie, facilitated by the inestimable Karl Bayly.  The show is a collaborative project between PILOT and Ramp Gallery in Hamilton and was part of SPARK International Festival of Media Arts and Design.

Publication: Keeping Secrets and Stealing Things

I had the very great pleasure of working with the lovely Amelia Hitchcock on a small publication for Keeping Secrets and Stealing Things.  It is prefaced with an essay written by Amelia, which is followed with a written conversation we had through the duration of the exhibition.  This had a limited print run but is limitlessly available as a download from the below link:
